3 Ways to Prepare For Holiday PTO So That You Can Actually Enjoy Yourself
3 Ways to Prepare For Holiday PTO So That You Can Actually Enjoy Yurself Its the most wonderful time of the year As the work year comes to a close, our days are filled with projects to finish, next years goals and budgets to create, and too many goodies in the breakroom. Many of us are counting the days until we can take some much-needed PTO to recharge and enjoy the holidays with our friends and families.Meanwhile, business owners and managers are facing their own crunch time, worrying about how to make those annual holiday bonuses, figuring out next years plan, and longing for some time off of their own. Far too many business owners and managers spend holiday time playing catch-up and preparing for the new year, instead of taking much-needed down time of their own.So, how can everyone work together to prepare for holiday PTO that can be enjoyed by all? Here are 3 ways to get ready for some holiday season me time.1. Pitch InAs you complete your projects, instead of using the countdo wn time to do menial tasks or check your social media a few mora times, consider asking your coworkers or boss how you can be helpful to them. Not only does such an offer earn you points with the boss, its just another way to spread some holiday cheer. Even better? A relaxed and rested boss is a happier one.2. Defer to Next YearAre end-of-year projects creating stress? Dont have enough time to rid your desk of unnecessary paper or your email inbox of unnecessary messages? Stop and take a breath. Write a list of must-dos between now and your PTO date. Focus only on those assignments that are necessary and defer all else to next year. Help your boss and coworkers do the same.3. Make it FunBusiness and personal stressors at this time of year can make the Grinch come out in all of us. No one wants to feel that way and no one wants to work with someone who feels that way. Think of ways to make this time at work more fun. Whether its listening to your favorite holiday music in the car on your commute or bringing everyones favorite coffee orders to the office one morning, find ways to make this time fun, even when youre working hard.Need to lighten the mood in advance of an important EOY meeting? Start it by asking everyone to share their most favorite holiday memory. Not only will it lighten the mood, it will help bring you closer as a team.No one wants to slide into PTO feeling stressed or unaccomplished. There are few feelings better than walking away from your office on the last day before PTO ready to relax and enjoy the holiday. And even better? Walking away knowing that your coworkers and bosses feel the same way. Working together to complete projects, prioritizing what must be done before the new year, and making your time at work fun can mean all the difference between an enjoyable holiday season and a stressful one.--Tiffany Couch is the CEO and founder of Acuity Forensics, a forensic accounting and fraud investigation firm that helps unravel complex finan cial crimes.

How One Preventable Mistake Is Driving Your Employees Away
How One Preventable Mistake Is Driving Your Employees Away According to a recent survey from Saba and WorkplaceTrends.com, one third of U.S. workers are looking to change jobs in the next six months. A large chunk of these employees 41 percent said theyre itching to make a move because they want career development opportunities that their current employers just arent offering. People are looking to grow, expand, and use their skill sets, and the economy is pretty much booming right now, says Adrienne Whitten, vice president of product marketing at Saba. If people arent getting what they want, they know its relatively easy to get it elsewhere. These results dont represent a glitch in the economic numbers, according to Whitten. Saba conducted a similar survey earlier this year, and the results were pretty much the same. What were seeing is a consistent desire among workers to find new jobs. The plot thickens when we see that a large majority of companiesareoffering development opportunities to employees. The problem isnt that companies are failing to give employees what they want the real problem is that HR is failing to communicate with employees about the career developments options available to them. Saba found that 60 percent of HR leaders say they provide clear career paths to employees, but only 36 percent of employees said the same.Theres definitely a eu-agrarpolitik between what HR is doing and what employees are hearing and believing, Whitten says.HR Needs to Get Proactive and Make Career Development More AccessibleTo explain the communication breakdown, Whitten references a conversation she had with an HR professional at another companyI asked them, How do people know there are opportunities open for them? Whitten explains. And they said, We have an internal job board Employees just need to log on, search through it, and find something that fits. The problemwith this approach to employee development is twofold. First, it assumes that employees know where they should look to find development opportunities. Second and perhaps more damaging it overestimates the amount of free time and energy employees have. When are employees supposed to go digging through internal sites for development opportunities during lunch break? Are they supposed to stay after hours to spend their evenings hunting for jobs at their own companies? The dual failure to communicate development opportunities and make them more accessible to employees leaves the door open for recruiters to swoop in and snag a companys best talent. What HR folks dont realize is that the competitor will actively solicit the employees, Whitten says. They will call them, sell them, market to them heavily about everything they have to offer. Its not good to provide passive options that require the employee to go out and do it themselves.Turn Your HR Department Into Proactive StorytellersIf HR depart ments want to retain their employees, rather than drive them straight into the arms of competitors, they need to first work on their storytelling skills, Whitten says. For a while now, recruiters have been turning to marketers to help them improve their recruiting strategies. Theyve been learning how to better advertise lages, tell compelling stories, and engage meaningfully with target markets. Whitten suggests it may be time for HR to give marketing a call as well. The recruiting-marketing partnership has been a really good partnership for the companies that are doing that, Whitten says. For the sake of retaining internal employees not just attracting new ones it may be time for HR to partner with marketing to help them tell stories. But learning to be good storytellers isnt enough in and of itself. HR has to not only know how to tell stories about professional development, but also how to proactively market those stories to employees.Whitten explainsLets say Joe was able to move f rom a front-line position to management. Tell that story Advertise it Put together a video and push it out to employees. Its your job to get it in the face of employees. You have to do a push not wait for a pull.Theres one more thing HR departments should do, too Put themselves in the employees shoes to determine whether or not career development opportunities are truly accessible. Is it easy for employees to find opportunities and is it easy for them to apply for these opportunities?Sometimes, its just a matter of looking at the programs and saying, What can I do differently? Whitten says. Dont just assume everything you are doing is available to employees and that they are aware of it.

Subtenant Sublease Rights and Limitations
Subtenant Sublease Rights and LimitationsSubtenant Sublease Rights and LimitationsCan a subtenant sue a landlord? If the master lease agreement did not grant the tenant the right to sublease to you in the first place, then, no, the subtenant may not sue his/her landlord. You may, however, be able to sue the person you subleased from if they lied to you about their rights to sublet to you in the first place. If you have a dispute with your landlord whether it is on a lease or sublease, and you cannot work things out on your own, contact an attorney who has experience in dealing with commercial contract disputes. The Master Lease Terms Apply Before you sublease from anyone, be sure that you see the master lease. Many landlords prohibit subleasing. If you sign a sublease with a tenant who does not have the right to sublease, you not only have few legal rights but you may even get evicted if the landlord finds out. The wording in the master lease is a key factor in determining if a s ubtenant has the right to sue, as well as if the subtenant assumed the obligations of the master lease (i.e., did the take over the entire space and obligations or just have a back corner office?) State Courts Rely on Language in the Master Lease State courts have rendered varying decisions on cases where subtenants sued landlords. Because this area of law is still taking shape, it is best to consult with an attorney in your own state. However, in general, the terms in the master lease play an important role in determining if a subtenant can sue a landlord. The master lease may limit your rights to sue even if your sublease says you can sue the tenant listed in the master lease. For example, it is fairly common for leases to contain arbitration or mediation clauses. This means you agree that if there is a dispute between you and the landlord you will not head off to court. This is usually a good thing for both subtenant and landlord as long as it does not state that you totally forfeit your rights to sue if an agreement cannot be reached. These clauses should name a specific mediation or arbitration company - not an individual. The arbitrator should be neutral- not someone affiliated with the landlord or their representative. Landlord Breaches Are Not Always Torts It is important to understand that if your landlord or the tenant you sublease from breaches the lease you generally cannot sue for tort damages (i.e., what laypeople commonly refer to as pain and suffering.) Only in the case of certain types of conduct or schwimmbad faith is there a possibility of suing for tort damages. Suing anyone is rarely profitable so never sign a lease with the idea that if there is trouble, you can just take a bad landlord to court and win. It is always better to sign an agreement you understand and are comfortable with and only with a landlord you feel you can trust.

sick days
sick daysSurvey 10% say they slept with a boss for mora vacation/sick daysMore men than women seem open to a sexual relationship with their work superiors, and that may be because it sometimes pays off Men are more likely than women to receive a promotion after sleeping with the boss, according to a recent survey.Conducted by career site Zety, the survey dives into the rationales behind a tryst with management, as well as possible pros and cons. Results found that mostpeople have not slept with their bosses 40% of more than 1,000 employees who were surveyed admitted to having been attracted to their workplace superiors, though they did not turn their desires into actions.Thats not to say that no ones getting busy with their boss A sizable 27.2% of women and 28.1% of men have actually gone through with the deed, and of those, almost 40% did so more than once.Among the most common motives for sexual relations with a boss were physical attraction and a desire for a good time. But smalle r percentages had more deviant reasons for getting steamy on a desk or in an office closet (or on an apartment bed, I guess) with their superior. And while most workers said they would do nothing if they found out another employee was sleeping with the boss, some people jumped at the opportunity to blackmail their manager or colleague. Here are some of the bizarre findings from the study - try not to cringe.Sleeping with the boss for more vacation days? Some people crave power, and 21.8% of respondents who slept with their boss said they did so for the simple reason that they found power attractive. But power also means managers and other superiors can bestow or take away privileges. When some employees decided to become sexually involved with their bosses, their motives were pretty selfish 12.1% wanted a pay raise, 11.2% a promotion, another 11.2% a larger bonus and 9.7% additional vacation or sick days. Some people were more altruistic 8.3% did it to help a colleague get a pay rai se, and 7.3% were trying to get a friend hired. Then, there were the truly dark souls 8.7% said they went through with it for the explicit reason of blackmailing their boss, which is truly next level.A fun factoid The survey found that men were twice as likely as women to sleep with their superiors in hopes of a promotion.Ahoy Facebook58% of employees said at some point in their career they knew of a colleague who had slept with their boss, and a majority (64.5%) said they were inclined to do nothing if they learned of such an affair. But theres always someone looking to stir up trouble, and a whopping 16% said they would share the news with a colleague, while 4.2% and 3.2% said they would use the information to blackmail their boss and the involved co-worker respectively.Another surprising phenomenon After colleagues heard of a sexual relationship between an employee and their boss, 6.6% said they would attempt to sleep with the employee and 5% said the same of the boss. To these i ndividuals, one sexual relationship appears to indicate that the parties involved are open for business? But perhaps the most eye-catching survey result is that 3.3% of people said they would post on social media after hearing about the relationship.Crawl out through the falloutFor most people who chose to have sex with their bosses, it seems nothing dire happened. Around a quarter of them actually ended up in an intimate relationship with their superior, almost 15% got a pay raise and 13% were promoted. But not everyone got out sans scars. 10.6% said colleagues started rumors about them, almost 8% said HR got involved, almost 14% found a new job and 3.4% were demoted. So whats the takeaway? Well, not everyones sleeping with their boss with good intentions, and some colleagues may be willing to stab their coworkers in the back for blackmail or a good story. But at least most people wont live-tweet your office drama, and thats something.
